In 2011, Dr Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg from the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, Germany, published his study about the activity around people’s brain while handling their stress. The result was soon became rather a sensation only few weeks after it was released. Meyer-Lindenberg and his associates found that people who live in the city doesn’t seem to cope with stress as well as those who live in countryside – this was pictured solely from their brain activity. According to theguardian.com, this study can be a prove of the general believe that a city can truly drive people mad.
So, what causes the high level of stress on city people? Dr. Oliver Gruebner argued on his study that there are many factors which contribute to this problem, ranging from air pollution, noise pollution, traffic jam, even the density of city’s population. Not only that, people who live in the city are often adopting the “hustle and bustle” principal on their life – meaning that they tend to submerge themselves on a large amount of activities, work, or chores on daily basis. For some cases, this isn’t always a bad thing because people must work hard in order to achieve their goals. But, on the other hand once we feel the burn-out, we have no choice but to re-evaluate our daily life.
Don’t worry though, for there will always be a solution for every problems. Many people would agree that after spending long days dealing with problems at work or home, all they long for is a peaceful and quick retreat over the weekend – and in a busy city like Jakarta, we do deserve a break every now and then.
