Chinese New Year is the main festival and also the most important celebration for families in China as it is the time to bring family together for feasting. In 2017, the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year Festival is on Saturday, January 28, and it will be the year of Fire Rooster and year 4175 on the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar is based on the twelve year cycle and each year is named after the Chinese zodiac animals.
There are various stories behind this; one of them is the story about Buddha who invited all animals to join him in New Year celebration but only 12 animals showed up. The Buddha then named a year after each of the 12 animals as a reward of their presence. The Chinese New Year itself starts with the new moon and ends 15 days later on the full moon.
The New Year ’s Day is also a time to remember ancestors and members of the family who have died. The ancestors are remembered with great respect because they were the ones who lay the foundations and bring glory to the family, so it is the most vital rituals to give sacrifices to the ancestors. Days before the New Year, every family usually have busy cleaning the house, decorate, buy presents and cook. Cleaning the house aims to sweep out all bad lucks from the old year, however it is believed to be a bad luck to clean the house on New Year’s Day.
A family dinner is always a must in Chinese New Year’s Day. It is to honor the presence of their ancestors’ spirit together with the living through a feast. There are ten essential dishes on New Year’s dinner such as Rice Cake or Nian Gao, Fish or Yu, Sweet Rice Ball, Turnip Cake, Dumpling, Long Noodles, Mustad Greens, Fruit, Spring Rolls and Chicken.
